Board of Directors


The Board of Directors bring a diverse range of skills to the Company.  Each one has experienced independent success in the Australian business world and collectively they have extensive experience in the financial industry.

It is this combination of experience, skill and discipline that gives MM&E's absolute return funds the ability to perform well on a consistent basis.


John Magowan (Chairman)

John Magowan John Magowan is Chairman of MM&E Capital, a boutique Hedge Fund.

John retired as CEO of Merrill Lynch (Australasia) in 2000, after fifteen years with them and McIntosh Securities Limited, whom they acquired.  Previously, he was Assistant Director General, Treasury of Victoria and an Economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia.

In the financial arena, he also served as a Director, Securities and Derivatives Association; a Member of the Chairman's Advisory Board at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Listing Advisory Committee of the Australian Stock Exchange and the Victorian Government Finance Advisory Council.

John's non-financial sector activities include ten years as a trustee with the Victorian Arts Centre Trust, followed by membership of its Philanthropic Council.  He has served as Chairman of a number of private companies - more recently Integrated Packaging, Six Figures and president of the North Melbourne Football Club.




John McIntosh (Non-Executive Director)

John McIntoshJohn McIntosh graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Commerce and has 35 years’ experience in the securities and investment banking industry.  John was a founding partner of the firm of McIntosh & Partners, which he established in 1972, and Chairman of McIntosh Securities Limited, which listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1987.  McIntosh Securities Limited changed its name to Merrill Lynch International (Australia) Limited in early 1997, following its acquisition by Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. that year.

Between 1997 and 2001, John was a Senior Adviser to Merrill Lynch in Australia and Chairman of its Advisory Board.  In addition, he was a founding partner of the private investment company Jawcamb Australia Pty Limited, which he established in conjunction with several partners in 1971.  He has also served as a founding Director of the Australian Stock Exchange between 1987 and 1991, was a founding Director of the Companies & Securities Advisory Committee in 1989 and chaired the Independent Review into Victoria’s Public Finances in 1992.

John remains President of the Marcus Oldham Foundation, Director of Mutual Trust Pty Ltd, and a Board Member of the Australian Olympic Foundation.


Ross Wilson (Non-Executive Director)

Ross WilsonRoss has had a long and successful career managing major Australian corporations.  Between 1994 and 2002 he was the CEO of Tabcorp Holdings Limited ('Tabcorp'), one of the country’s largest gaming companies.  When he left Tabcorp it was capitalised at almost $5 billion, and earned an annual profit after tax of $260 million.

Prior to his time at Tabcorp, Ross was CEO of Southcorp Holdings Limited, Australia’s largest wine company and diversified manufacturer.  He held this position from 1987, and under his stewardship the company moved from being a relatively small brewing and packaging company, know as SA Brewing, to one of Australia’s largest publicly listed manufacturers.

Ross has also worked for the Federal Government in such areas as Treasury, the Bureau of Transport Economics, the Committee on Foreign Takeovers and the Prices Justification Tribunal.  He was educated at Monash University, graduating as a Bachelor of Economics with Honours and gaining a Master’s Degree in Administration.  He is also on the Council of Swinburne University of Technology and is actively involved with the Multiple Sclerosis Society.


Tom Elliott (Managing Director)

Tom's PhotoTom was a co-founder of MM&E Capital Limited in late 2001, and has successfully managed the day-to-day affairs of both the company and its various funds under management since investing began in July 2002.

Before founding MM&E in 2001, Tom was an Executive Director of investment bank, Flinders Capital Limited, which specialized in both listed and unlisted equity investments.  Tom has also worked in stockbroking with McIntosh Securities Limited (now Merrill Lynch Australia), investment banking with Wood Gundy Inc. in Toronto and New York and retailing with Country Road Australia Limited.

Tom is a financial commentator on Melbourne radio stations 3AW and 3RRR.  Tom appears regularly on the ABC's "Inside Business" program and irregularly on the evening news bulletins and current affairs programs of Channels 7, 9 and 10.

Tom holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) from Oxford University (UK).
